Scotland & Santa Clara

Scotland

Visits to Scotland were 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2015. All visits included time spent on the peninsula of Applecross in Ross-shire. Visits ranged from 10 days to six months. I stayed in the villages of Arrina / Arinachrinachd, Coillieghillie & Culdie; and spent considerable time just visiting the villages of Ard Ban, Camustearrach, Camusteel & Toscaig. All villages except Arrina are located on the southeast coast of Applecross, separated from the Isle of Raasay and the Isle of Skye by the body of water known as the Inner Hebrides.

The temperatures are moderate [add the range] throughout the year, as the land lies at the northernmost tip of the Gulf Stream. Wind, gales & storms, however, are common; snow does occur in winter months, but rarely stays on the ground more than a few days except in the mountains.

Santa Clara

The city of Santa Clara, population now well over 100,000 citizens from countries all over the world, is at the center of Silicon Valley. Busy, hectic, schizophrenic about whether it wants to be a leader in high technology & sports [home of the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League, the San Jose Sharks hockey team & the Earthquakes soccer team]…or a former city of orchards & an easy-going lifestyle that, until recently, remained easy-going compared it largest neighboring city – San Jose [population over 1 million].

Let’s see if I can find some photos representative of this fast-growing city on the cusp of confusion & chaos…

NOTE: The lack of captions for some photos reflects my lack of knowing how to add them, rather than any failure of WordPress…

AS ALWAYS: If you would like to know more about an  image – especially one without a caption, just let me know; email @ ross.payne110@gmail.com is best…thanks!

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: There is another “section” to this entry; it follows the photos [mostly?], and relates to a writing – rather than photo – project that I am working on these days…

THE FOLLOWING TEXT IS UNRELATED TO THE ABOVE TEXT AND/OR IMAGES: This text is one of several entries I will use in a document of mixed fictional & historical &  biographical “facts,” based on books I’ve collected during the past ~10 years, selected randomly – both the books themselves & the pages that I’ve opened. There are approximately 30 books in this “collection,” and this is text no. 2 of those ~30. The idea is for these texts entries to stimulate an “original” response of my “own”…sort of like the way reviewers in The New York Book Review review the books they review:

…AND IMMEDIATELY BELOW IS THE TEXT THAT FOLLOWS – ON PAGE 63 OF “SECOND MATE,” published/revised in 1936]:

“leeward. More than half a dozen times during her perilous descent his heart had been in his mouth.

He picked up a megaphone and put it to his lips, shouted something that was immediately filched away by the wind. Nobody heard him, but what he had bellowed was−“Good work! Well done!”

The floating oil had reached the Papadulos. The sea no longer broke over her. She lay pitching sluggishly in the swell, still lying over to starboard.

Looking at her, it struck Ravensworth that her list had increased, that her stern was deeper in the water. Her after well-deck was entirely submerged−the tops of the seas cascading over her short poop.

She seemed to be sinking slowly by the stern as water found its way forward. The end could not be long delayed.

‘Half-speed ahead!’ he ordered. ‘Helm hard aport!’

‘Go down to the chief engineer and ask him to carry on with the oil!’ he added to the cadet messenger.

He intended to steam direct to windward doing what he could to flatten the water before making a wide circle to leeward to pick up the lifeboat.”

Angel is 11 Months & 2 Days Old Today

Today is a Friday, 22 March 2013. On Angel’s 11th-month birthday on Wednesday, the wonderful & very caring girls – can  I say that – at the Santa Clara Pet Hospital weighed Angel at 74 lbs. & 7 oz.

A gain of only 7 oz. in 2 weeks, so her rapid growth is slowing. Given that Angel is now almost double her weight of 40+ pounds when Lori first brought her home last fall  – October, I think.

Lori hopes Angel can stay at about 80 lbs., which is a healthy weight for a “smaller” female Rottweiler. The vet says that big dogs “mature” at 18 months, rather than 12, so “Stay tuned,” as old-time tv used to say…

Anyway, these 3 photos are from this afternoon, just before Angel met up with her best friend, Axel, an Alaskan Husky that initially outweighed Angel by at least 15 lbs. Those days are long gone, although I do have a short video of then & will post as soon as I learn how WordPress allows that.

I see that I’m at twice the my self-imposed limit of 100 words.

Always trust what you see, rather than what is said.

I think Buffalo Bob – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Bob_Smith –  was the first to say that…

TheGhostOfMrs.Smith_1 of Many

WhiteCat appeared the day after I euthanized Mrs. Smith because of a tumor that was pressing against her intestines. As she would soon die without extraordinary “intervention” & it being an intervention that I myself have already “signed & sealed” as completely unacceptable to me, I ended her life – with her alive in my arms, and still purring. And as I said to the doctor who administered the medication that stopped her heart from beating, “My hope is that someone I love will do this for me.” Then, the day after Mrs. Smith’s death, I took this series of photos from the deck where I have lived with her for the past 5 years. I have yet to see the WhiteCat since. BlackCat [“Pup”] lives/sleeps in my front-room closet, and appears for feeding as soon as I arise, and when the evening comes, every day now.

Final Note: WhiteCat actually appeared on the scene on Saturday, 9 March, which is 2 days after Mrs. Smith wandered off during the middle of the night & then Lori & I finally found her ~18 hours later – crying & meowing & with grit embedded in her front paws – in a carport several hundreds of yards from the studio @ 954-C.

Basically, Mrs. Smith never ate after that evening “rescue”. She had already seen the vet on Monday the 4th of March. On that day, she weighed less than 5 lbs. – down from 7.5 just 6 months ago. She also had some kind of infection that was raising her temperature, so we started antibiotics right away…

From that Monday the 4th, until the following Tuesday morning, the 12th, when I returned to the vet so that she could stay there for a week to get ’round-the-clock “intensive care”, she was never the Mrs. Smith I’ve spent 5 years living with almost every day & all day, on almost every day. And when I was away on my several extended stays in the Scottish Highlands, Mrs. Smith lived with Lori & her menagerie..

So, late Tuesday afternoon, March 12, I went back to the vet, and Dr. Stephen injected the medication that stopped Mrs. Smith’s heart from beating.

Then, just 2 days later, on Thursday, March 14, I took the series of photos above. I have not seen WhiteCat since then. Nor has Lori…

However, I did receive an email just last night from Lori, regarding an email that she had just received from her daughter, Nicole, who teaches Specials Needs kids in Dubai. It seems that Nicole & her roommate has just yesterday come upon a cat that had been hit by a car, and rescued it. It has surgery tomorrow. Following are photos that Nicole has sent to Lori.
InjuredDubaiKittyNeedsHome_100
Intraveneos Feeding_100Maybe Nikkie for a Name_100

Post Script: So, Lori & Nicole & I agree that if she – Nicole – can bring “Nikkie” back here from Dubai when she visits Lori this spring, “Nikkie” will come along with her to live with me [and Pup & “Scared Kitty” – photos & story later]…

We’ve already checked U.S. Customs requirements, which are very reasonable regarding domestic cats entering the U.S, so “Stay Tuned” as the saying goes…

Wild Cat Seeks Domesticity

Friendly wild cat seeks gentle owner for long-term monogamous relationship.

9 reasons to take me home with you

[1] I’ll be six years old this Fourth of July! Let’s Celebrate – Starting Now!

[2] I weigh 14.9 pounds

[3] I am a 1-person companion who likes to hiss & show my teeth to anyone else. Sometimes I like to trick people into petting me & then scare them. But I almost never use my claws – and I’ve had my rabies shots.

[4] I am in neutral regarding my sexual driving, but I may still need help learning to spray only outside.

[5] I was recently treated for being unable to pee, but the wonderful doctors dave & kent fixed that without any surgery, and I’m fine now.

[6] To stay fit & ready for any fight, about 80% of my diet needs to be “urinary SO.” I eat ~one 6oz can per day, and each can costs about $1.50. So that’ll set you back like a latte every other day – if I were a drinker. But coffee sometimes keeps me awake during the day.

[6] I think I could be happy living inside, especially if I could come & go as I please.

[8] I’m beautiful – please see my many accompanying photos…

[9] I can supply excellent references for my behavior when loved by a kind person.

A PDF PSA Just for You from Pup

If you’d like to meet me, please send an email c/o ross.payne110@gmail.com or loriamay08@gamail.com and we’ll get back to you.
